General Information on the Modern Standards

Aroundsquare's "Standards" begleri series is our homage to the ubiquitous “standard issue” Greek barrel shaped begleri. This series is a contemporary adaptation of the original timeless design, with a slightly refined shape, precision machined and polished to perfection. They feature the same 1:1 aspect ratio favoured by most players, and a compact form factor that is small enough to slip easily past the string instead of binding, and sufficiently rounded for comfortable play. The right angles in the design provide excellent bead control without compromising on nimbleness. 

The Modern Standard sets is sized at 16mm tall by 16mm wide, giving them the same overall size as two of our Hydra beads stacked together. Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of the design relative to our other products, is the generous top bore, designed to accommodate 550 paracord.
 
The Modern Standard series is Hardcore Compatible, meaning that it is designed to accommodate the weighted beads of the “Hardcore Gut System” which enable players to customize the weight and feel of the set, for their optimal setup. While the Modern Standard series is available in a number of heavier metals that don’t really require these additional Hardcore beads, the aluminum version is light enough that most players will want to add weight. 

About the Modern Standard AL Splash series

The aluminum splash Modern Standards are available in two colour ways, blue base, and pink base. The beautiful multi-colour splash patterns are reasonably robust, but will mark, scratch, and ding up over time, which is the nature of the beast with all begleri, and particularly with aluminum beads, which are relatively soft. This series ships with aluminum “End Caps” which add substantially to the weight, and because of the flanged bottoms, gives a low weight distribution to help carry momentum. The flanges also extend slightly beyond the diameter of the main beads, adding to the grip and bead control. With a full set weight of around 16.4g (8.2g per end), the sets are lighter than what many players are used to, but the light weight works well with the angular design of the beads, and provides a very enjoyable experience, especially for casual players who are in the game more for fun than for pushing the limits of technical trickery.

For players wanting to add a bit more weight to their set, bronze Micro Standards (7.8g) are available as an optional add-on (discounted), which gives an overall weight of around 12.8g per end.
