Knucklebone - Aluminum

Aluminum Knucklebone

AO2's Knucklebone is the original hardbody knuckle roller. This is a simple skill toy that is manipulated with the fingers of one or both hands to perform tricks and patterns, or simply to pass the time. It is very discrete (unless dropped) and can be played in very restricted spaces, and in contexts where other showier skill toys may not be appropriate. Please visit the AO2 YouTube channel for demonstrations and tutorials, in our ever-growing Knucklebone playlist.

The aluminum version of this toy is an extremely nimble and adept addition to the line.. and is already a hit among players. Like its titanium brother, it is heavy enough to provide the momentum needed to reliably perform momentum-based tricks (think thumb rolls and sonics), while still being light enough to manipulate smoothly between two hands without exhausting the fingers too much. The aluminum model has a sand-blasted finish that provides just the right amount of grip, while also helping to mitigate the stickiness that is sometimes felt when playing in humid climates or with damp hands. The aluminum model is laser etched with the word "a r o u n d s q u a r e" around the equator.

The aluminum kbones are made from 7075 aluminum, which is a relatively strong alloy (the same grade used in a lot of aircraft parts manufacturing). However, the material is still relatively soft compared to stainless steel and titanium. If these are dropped on concrete or kept in the pocket with keys or similar items, they are likely to show dings and scratches over time. This is not inherently problematic, since the texture tends to enhance the playability and control on the ends, while the the smooth middle section is protected from drops due to the shape. However, just like with our begleri products, please go into this knowing that the items will begin to show their age with extended use. In addition, the sand blasting will also tend to wear down over time, giving a smoother polished look if played a lot. Unlike the titanium and brass models, the aluminum tends not to patina.

Although the aluminum model is lighter than the other metal versions, it will still make a loud noise when it is dropped on hard surfaces, and has the potential to break things in its path. Be careful with it.

Note from the designer: I developed the original knucklebone circa 1989 when I was a kid in school. The crude original version was made from some kind of polymer clay (see photo). The new version is better suited to bigger hands, and has been designed for smoother flow and better trick potential.

WARNING: Metal versions are heavy and solid--can break things or hurt things if dropped. It is recommended that you play over carpet, couch, or the like, or outside. Some versions look almost tasty, so keep them away from young kids, and don't let anyone try to ingest them.
